A good book to read for the sake of knowing it’s contents. There are more than a few gems to trawl out of the otherwise useless or uninteresting or inapplicable information. I would suggest it be read by those who appreciate stoic philosophy, or are in need of a light read to be occasionally perused before bed.

I really liked this read. I love Marcus Aurelius’s philosophy.  Sometimes hard to follow and takes some thinking. But this was an impactful read for me.

Not really sure how to give a rating to a Roman emperor's philosophical musings.
"Is the cucumber bitter? Then throw it out."
The edition I own came with an excellent set of essays explaining Aurelius' life and how scholars look at the text.

It's interesting to read the personal philosophy of a Roman Emperor and realize how little has changed in just under two thousand years. Aurelius' meditations are still highly relevant in places and display a degree of insight that reminded me of things said by my therapist to help with anxiety. There's plenty of decent advice in this book, even for those who do not intend to adopt Stoicism as their outlook on life more generally.

If you go in knowing that it’s just a compilation of an emperor’s notes turned into a book, I think it’s a great piece of philosophy and history. If you’re expecting a masterpiece of Stoicism, you’ll be let down.

There are some absolutely banging quotes in it, though.
