I didn't finish because I didn't check trigger warnings unfortunately but I did love the world building and enjoyed the writing style. Just more secual violence than I had prepared myself for.

Definitely not an easy book to read at first and not something that you can speed read. Marlon James has an incredible writing style and some beautiful prose. It's an intense story with rich African mythology that sets up some great world building. Also some graphic sex and violence components for those that might be deterred from those squeamish elements. Really looking forward to the next perspective and layer with Moon Witch, Night Devil.

I have no idea what was happening for the entire last half of this book. I suppose books like this are like art, beautiful but open to interpretation and not everyone is going to like or understand them. I thought the writing was gorgeous, but I don’t really find a massive appeal in not being able to understand the narrative because it’s being bogged down in beauty. I was also greatly discomforted by the gender dynamics in this novel as there is a strong hatred by the Tracker towards women/femme presenting characters, and anything having even slight amounts to do with femininity is made fun of or ostracized.

Am I still going to read the sequel because it sounds interesting and I’d like some more art to ponder? Yes. But I would not recommend this book to anyone.

I really wanted to like this but the writing style/plot structure just wasn’t for me
