"I got the feeling he knew a hundred ways to help me, and a hundred ways to kill me".
I'm so glad they've compiled the Reacher short stories into a beautiful hardback. I was really happy when this was released because otherwise the short stories are only available as ebooks.
I enjoyed the vast majority of these shorts. It goes without saying that not all short stories are enjoyable when you become accustomed to an author's full length novels, but I'm happy that I enjoyed most of these. I outright loved some of them - Second Son and Small Wars were brilliant!
As a collection, I've rated No Middle Name ⭐⭐⭐⭐ but below I've put individual ratings (in story order) with the random thoughts that occurred to me while reading these:
Too Much Time - a corrupt cop is a plot always guaranteed to anger me - ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Second Son - a teenage Jack (13) and Joe (15) living in Japan with their mother and father. Even when 13 year old 'Reacher said nothing' it made me smile 😂 an enjoyable short story - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
High Heat - Reacher is 16 years old and is yet to join the army. The story might've lost me if it were a full length novel, so kept my attention as a short story. Partway through the story, Reacher is in a parked car with his current squeeze doing what 16 year olds do, when he sees Son of Sam (the .44 calibre killer) approaching the car 😱 pretty cool. He heads to West Point (he puts one foot in in traffic lane and kept one on the kerb and stuck out his thumb - that line slays me) - ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Deep Down - one of Reacher's early cases. Not as interesting as the previous short stories - ⭐⭐
Small Wars - this one started with a bang and kept getting better with the a appearance of Joe Reacher and Frances Neagley 😊 excellent! - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
James Penney's New Identity - no Reacher for 61 minutes in a 71 minute audiobook. That said, I love the stories from other people's perspectives where Reacher appears as a nobody - ⭐⭐⭐
Everyone Talks - Reacher is just a babe in some of his stories - ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Not a Drill - unremarkable - ⭐⭐
Maybe They Have a Tradition - just totally random and not a very Reacher story. That said, I love the stories from other people's perspectives where Reacher appears as a nobody ⭐⭐⭐
Guy Walks into a Bar - unremarkable - ⭐⭐
No Room at the Motel - again, Reacher is just a doll and I feel like I've read about him doing this before. Have I read this short story before? 🤔 who knows? 🤷🏻♀️ - ⭐⭐⭐
The Picture of the Lonely Diner - another instalment of 'How did Reacher walk into this situation?' 😂 - ⭐⭐⭐

I just loved reading all of Lee Child's short stories featuring Jack Reacher. Some were better than others (which is to be expected), but any story with Reacher at the center makes me smile. Just terrific!

The first few stories gave a good background on Reacher if you have been reading the series. As the short stories went on though, they seemed to have less and less purpose.

Welp. It looks like I am going to have to find and reserve every single Jack Reacher novel. There are currently 21. Sigh.
I love Reacher and even with just the snippets of his life in these short stories. Can't wait to read the rest.
