Can we talk about how Cassandra Clare took my heart and shattered it into a thousand pieces?

I am not a fan of Cassandra Clare’s novels. They’re poorly written when compared to other fantasy authors. But man, she has really stepped up her game here. Not. In. Plot. There’s hardly plot. Plot is a device used to move along the relationships in this book. But I’m here for it because she’s written the relationships so well. I’m unreasonably invested into the characters. Not in where they end up in the plot but more who they end up with. And I’m not mad about it.

4.5. Wowee. It was so good to be back in Edwardian London with my gang of angel-human children. This book explored sooooo much. Most places that seemed lightly touched on in "Chain of Gold" were fleshed out in this (even though some conversations did not prove fruitful for a ship of mine). I thought at times the fantasy aspect of the series took a backseat to some of the emotions and relationships that needed to play out, and I didn't hate that at all. I appreciate that we could see the characters in their everyday lives without having to worry that they'll die at any moment. The Merry Thieves became even more endearing in this installment, and I hope Thomas sleeps well tonight. Matthew continued to break my heart into smaller and smaller pieces. James made me swoon and want to strangle him consistently. And Christopher, sweet Christopher, you will get your limelight sometime, my friend--it just won't be in these first two books. I wish Lucie had been more involved in the gang throughout the book; I loved her romanticization of the moment when she was around though. *Cue Liam Payne as the dancer instructor from the Best Song Ever music video* Cordelia, you sit right there because you are per-fect. And Grace is on my sworn enemies list. I will say that due to the length of the book, some topics/discussions/conversations/scenarios happen multiple times with little to no outcome. James and Cordelia were a bit in a time loop at times, doing the thing I loathe most which is almost saying something and being cut off by something else. The ending felt very reminiscent of "Clockwork Prince" and not in a way I truly loved, but I did appreciate CC including agency for the characters so that it wasn't just a depressing miscommunication ending. The woman just can't resist a love triangle and I don't know why!!
