This was a book club book (we meet tomorrow!) and so I might not have read it otherwise - I find it a little odd to have historical fiction even tangentially related with Queen Elizabeth II, which is a little nonsensical, though perhaps because this was written while she was still alive and it’s still pretty recent that she was queen. I’m also not much of a monarchist, though this was the kind of things I was interested in: the sewing of Princess Elizabeth’s wedding dress. Lots of textile history and description!

In 2016, Heather is getting groceries when her mother calls to say her Nan died (as an aside, this was part of the book that I was like “really? REALLY her mother couldn’t wait for her to finish getting groceries or like, prepare her in some other way). Heather is devastated, but also intrigued when she’s given a box of beautiful, intricate embroideries with a note on them and a handful of photos. After she gets laid off, she decides to go to England to find out what she can about her grandmother and these embroideries.

In 1947, Ann Hughes has been working at Norman Hartnell’s for 11 years, having worked her way up to senior embroiderer. Miriam Dassin is newly arrived in London from France, bearing the scars of the war. They begin to work together, become friends - and become the leads in embroidering the princess’s dress, a role which will have unintended impacts on them both, forever.

While the history and explanation of the textile arts was fabulous, this was a little too sweet and neatly tied up for me at the end. Overall, pleasant and interesting.

I felt like the sexual assault was not really necessary and felt a touch gratuitous. But overall enjoyable book!
