Feels like an American cousin of Black Swan Green, which is all really disappointing. This book is a series of incidents disguising itself as a novel by means of having a cover bind all the bits together, but really, it's got the thinnest plot, no real follow through and it's not much of a book. There's an obvious love of the sea, and that portion is presented really strongly, really entertainingly, but the rest of the book around it just fails to amount to much. I'm not quite sure what all the praise is actually about, but I obviously didn't read the same book everyone else did. It's an easy, unchallenging read that didn't take long and won't stick with me much longer.

Meh, I know it has all these wonderful reviews but I just had a hard time getting into the story, staying with the story and liking the story.
Coming of Age books don't seem to be my thing and that is what this is. I wasn't fond of the over the top descriptions of sea life so that didn't help with keeping my interest in the story either. Kid goes to the inlets and bays at night and finds unique creatures.

Someone in book group picked this and turned out to be a great book. The bestsellers get all of the hype and I love finding/reading a book I haven't heard much about and turns out to be better than most of what everyone else claims to be good!

When I first started this book, I was worried it might not appeal to me because I had heard it used a lot of scientific terms, but the way they're incorporated to be metaphors actually made it interesting and not like the author threw in random facts. For me, this book didn't stick out immensely and wow me, but I enjoyed it. There were definitely moments where I found myself more connected to the characters than I thought, and the book had a lot of beautiful metaphors and descriptions that I really appreciated.

I grew up in this place in the 80s & 90s, and my parents still live there. This book is so accurate it almost feels more like an autobiography. Beautiful writing and coming of age story. I fell in love with Miles, and this book made me feel homesick for a time and a place.
