I was frustrated by this book for three main reasons:

1. The articles were too short! Each were 5-7 pages; it was common for an argument to introduce an interesting line of thought only to randomly wrap up without really exploring that line of thought.

2. The articles were, in general, unsurprising. Any regular reader of the New York Times will have already encountered most of these ideas, and the ethics presented here never differs from a vaguely Western, progressive, and cosmopolitan take on life. Which is my take! But I was hoping to be challenged more by the writings here.

3. The articles felt very time-bound in the early 2010s. Frequent references to the 2012 and 2016 U.S. elections brought to mind public figures I haven't thought about in years. I was hoping to see a broader scope.

Exactly what it sets out to be - a collection of readable, short articles written for the public. Interesting tidbits.

77 short essays reflecting on modern issues compiled from a range of sources over several years. The book was organized in a great way, by topic. No one essay was incredibly complex, but many were very thought provoking. They introduced new concepts to me, and bolstered my understanding of older ones.

This is philosophy as it was meant to be done, in my opinion. Short opinion pieces that challenge you to think about a topic in a new light, and then inspire further research and reflection. I thought most of the essays were worthy of my time (only a few I would call trash). I thoroughly enjoyed about 20% of them, which is really a very high percentage for a collection of essays.
