I liked the message behind this book, but I thought it was unnecessarily long. I also felt like for a book about witchcraft- it was lacking in it. I did enjoy Fern’s later years where we get to see her reflecting back on her life and felt like this was the best part of the book. This book touches on a lot of hot topics, which can be triggering, so read with caution. It was a different book, but didn’t feel like it had his normal quirky horror flare to it. My favorite I have read of his was The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires and preferred that over this !

I’m going to add the caveat that I read this at a time in my life where the content of the plot was an extra sensitive topic to me.
I felt the story was set up well, and the horror was there but incredibly triggering because of recent events in my family, which is why I bumped my star rating up because I know if I had read it even three months ago, that’s how it would’ve been rated.
I enjoyed the dynamic between all of the main characters and their determination, though I did get frustrated with the back and forth of the main character. However, I had to remind myself that the character was not only going through two difficult situations at once but was also just a teenager, so of course she had difficulty making impossible choices. When a teenager is still trying to figure out who they are, that complicates everything so of course there’s that whiplash feeling sometimes when a character argues back and forth. I struggled a little bit in the middle, but I think I’m just an impatient person; this was a medium-paced read, which is usually fine, but I think with how I was feeling when I read it meant I wanted it to be faster paced or the tension to be drawn out different but I recognise that that’s my fault, not the story’s. All in all, there was an incredibly satisfying ending and I felt it was wrapped up nicely after being uncertain about how it would go in the final chapters. I will definitely be reading it again when I’m further away from personal issues tied to the book because I think I will enjoy it more then.
