I really liked the idea of the characters so I'm kind of disappointed that the plot isn't really there. The majority of the plot is the romance. There is a subplot of political unrest. But really like 10% of the book in total is actually part of that plot. The rest of it is the relationships between the characters and that is a very underdeveloped, they kiss maybe halfway through the book and then enter into a relationship.... there's a third act breakuptoo, but there's no real build up. Because of that, the connection with the characters and potential connection with their romantic plot line just falls flat.

Very silly but very fun. There's something very audacious about the central premise, and the world-building is never fully fleshed out on some important points (what EXACTLY are the beliefs and values of Arthurian cultists? and what EXACTLY are the attitudes of this society towards queerness?).

But who cares! Arthur and Gwen are an extremely fun duo, their arc from enemies to allies to friends is gradual and nuanced, and their relationships with Bridget and Gabe are filled with quality kissing descriptions and that good yearning. I especially enjoyed Gwen's arc, including its final phase when Bridget points out how selfish some of her assumptions about their relationship are.

The main plot is a bit of an afterthought but it does exactly what it needs, bringing things to a boil for our lovers and giving them one final, harsh test. On the whole, a fun little romance read.
