AMAZING BUT CHECK THE TRIGGER WARNINGSaprilyvonne's review against another edition

“It Ends With Us” by Colleen Hoover is definitely overhyped, but I did enjoy reading it. I get the fan base, but this book is messy and triggering. I never liked Ryle at all and felt so frustrated with Lily’s obliviousness to his “charms” in the beginning. He was creepy and honestly it was difficult to see how she could even love him. I could see the reasoning for this technique to help further the plot though.
I did enjoy Atlas’s character and could appreciate the young romance between him and Lily via her journal. I also understand why fans petitioned for the sequel.
I suppose I wished I knew more going in, since this book is not a romance. It’s about domestic violence and child abuse/neglect. If it were not for the author’s very vulnerable afterward, I’d probably give it a lower rating. She clearly explains herself, her pov and connection to violence in her own family. That was heartbreaking itself. It helped set the tone for the novel and explain why there was so much more compassion for people who make bad choices. I suppose that would help readers understand the victims more, and I did appreciate that approach. I still had a hard time feeling anything, but loathing for Ryle. It’s definitely easier to see issues when you’re looking on the inside from an outside perspective. Just be aware of the triggers and drama. It could’ve been worse I’m sure, but it was still upsetting to read.
