The fact that this book is so popular just really bums me out.

Listen I know this is a stupid thing to get caught up on. But the book lost me on page 1 when the character feels like hanging out on a rooftop, uses Google Earth to look for nearby apartment buildings with rooftops, and then just like, goes to one and somehow gets onto the roof. Later we learn it’s a luxury building full of rich people penthouses. Do they not lock the building????? Is there no doorman wondering why a sketchy 23 year old is lurking around???? My immediate impression was, “ok so this author has never lived in or been to an apartment building.”

Also the fact that the character is named Lily Blossom Bloom and she owns a flower shop at age 23. And the creepy love interest is a med school student yet calls himself Dr. Kincaid and somehow is fabulously wealthy and can buy a 3 bedroom apartment ?? TMI but once I went on a date with a med school student and he used Kleenex as napkins and had almost no furniture in his rented studio apartment. So now we know the author has no concept of money or med school either.

Don’t even get me started on the teenage diary entries written as letters to Ellen Degeneres that take up half the book. Or the fact that in the diaries Lily Blossom Bloom recounts entire conversations in quotes. Oh and of course the other character names are Atlas, Ryle, Allysa, Rylee and Emmy Dori because the author apparently hasn’t met normal humans with normal names either.

This is the first and only Colleen Hoover book I’ll ever read!

the only parts I didn't mind reading were the teenager's letters because there, the naivety in her language made sense.

it was okay. in no way is this a personal jab at the author, but it seems like she wrote this as a form of writer’s prose therapy rather than with the goal of a good book. there were several feel-good moments, but few hard-hitting moments. it was cohesive, but severely lacked depth.

what really baffled me was that the content was very mature (explicit sex, rape, etc.), but the writing level was very elementary. the vocabulary, structure, and attempts at humor were crude at best. There were a lot of angsty, predictable one-liners that were tough to get through (in fact, the whole books was pretty predictable. the author would try to drop foreshadowing at certain points, but this would simply quell any suspense retaining your interest)

also, the characters seemed poorly constructed and half-done. I can see attempt at her developing characters, but she didn’t give them enough time to grow. She skipped any development and went straight to turning points and changes. it was hard to feel the impact of those changes when you weren’t familiar with or invested in the character.

Also still scratching my head at how Atlas is supposed to be the hero?? He seemed pretty creepy to me from the start. Especially returning on her 16th birthday just to have sex. All around kinda shitty characters.

I just can’t get into books that are currently hyped on BookTok/Bookstagram.

But I also want to know, who thought that these books were the best ones out there? Maybe it’s just my mood, maybe Colleen Hoover’s books aren’t for me. Either way, this is another book of the contemporary romance genre that was published between 2016 and 2023, so the last 7 years, that has just felt like a flop or more accurately, not interesting enough to keep me reading. I am only 21 pages in. And again, like I mentioned for another book I’ve DNF’d in the last month, why are authors pushing for 400+ pages?

If someone can convince me to read this book, without spoilers, then I’ll continue it. But honestly, cannot see why so many people love this book.
