Interesting concept and obviously a marvel in its time but I found long sections very boring, didn't love the narrative voice and lack of understanding of other cultures

It was written quite well, and there were a couple of interesting parts, but the character Friday was written and treated in an extremely unpalatable way to my modern (and part Indigenous) ear.. He is treated by both author and protagonist like a pet with no agency who must be trained into civilisation. It was much like Moll Flanders in structure and concept, but Robinson lacked Moll’s charm, so I found it quite dull.

When I first started this book and realized there were no chapters, I thought I would struggle, but I actually found myself agreeing with the lack of them. The story is meant to be told by the man who lived it, and breaking it up would have interrupted his stream of consciousness style. I really enjoyed this book. Probably won’t read again, but glad that I have.

Not my favourite of the classics we've read for the discussion group. On the other hand, there were others I liked even less....
A parte em que ele veio para o Brasil e escravizou negros é absolutamente nojenta e o livro perdeu o apelo pra mim
Unrated because DNF. I wanted to read Robinson Crusoe (that is NOT the full title) because it is so famous but I was also trepidatious because now I come to think of it I have never heard anyone talk about the plot or seen any adaptations. The character names and the footprint in the sand imagery have long surpassed the actual narrative. It's also very old so quite difficult to read both in style (dialogue isn't really a thing yet) and because half the words are spelled weirdly. He rambles on seemingly endlessly sometimes so I had to skip ahead and yet other dramatic moments are skimmed over.
Anyway, it is first person, and Crusoe tells us of what an impulsive young man he was and how he makes extremely ill-advised decisions that would eventually lead to his ruin. So essentially we are stuck in the mind of a really dislikeable character. And then during one scene he kills a sleeping lion for a laugh, and it's really brutal and grim, and I just thought 'I can't stand this character, I don't care what happens to him', so I think I'm done.
