Journalist Dawson Scott has just returned from covering a war overseas that's violence has left him haunted and mentally fatigued. His new editor assigns a story to him while, at the same time, he receives a tip from a source at the FBI that an old, unsolved case he'd reported on years ago was rearing its head again. Dawson decides to follow up on that old case, the disappearance and presumed murder of a man whose biological parents are on the FBI most-wanted list. While covering the story, Dawson meets Amelia, the missing man's wife/widow, and develops feelings for her and her two sons.

While I used to read quite a lot of Sandra Brown, and I enjoyed this story, the two novels of hers that I've read recently don't appeal to me as much as they used to. I still love mystery and suspense, but I've developed a strong preference for Nordic noir types of mysteries and also paranormal mysteries, and these stories don't fit into either of those categories.

Sandra Brown outdid herself with this one. A real late night page turner.

I never know whether to rate these types of books as though I were doing so in a mass market genre vacuum or whether to compare them to the other things I typically read. For what it is, it was great -‘highly entertaining, slightly steamy, fast-paced. Perfect coronavirus social distancing reading material, in my opinion. I kind of want to order a bunch more Sandra Brown books now.

I won a signed copy of this book, and it finally came in the mail last week. This book is absolutely incredible, and so much better than I was expecting. It was the very first book from Sandra Brown that I have ever read and she has quickly become one of my favorite authors. She has a way with words that is so moving, and touching, and suspenseful. This story had me hooked from the beginning, and I immediately took a liking to Dawson's character. I really loved the relationship between Dawson and Amelia, and I was rooting for them to end up together the whole time. I also really loved Dawson's relationship with Grant and Hunter, and it was insanely adorable to see him play with them all the time. From about page 160 through the end of the book, the plot twists keep coming on-stop which made it a very entertaining read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and that ending blew me away, and I did not see that coming at all. So incredible! Even though Dawson's character could be rude at time, I knew he was just troubled and he was trying to do the right thing, and as it turns out, he had all the right reasons for behaving the way he did. He was such a developed, and intriguing character, and I felt so sorry for him towards the end. I loved the romantic scenes between him and Amelia, and I just adored them both in general. It only took me 4 days to read this, and I'm a slow reader, so that's how you know it's good. This won't be the last book I'll be reading from Sandra Brown.

I received a free copy of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

I've been a huge Sandra Brown fan for as long as I can remember; she was one of the first adult authors I started reading! I found this book on Netgalley's website, and couldn't pass up the opportunity to read more of her work.

This book didn't disappoint and I liked it just as much as all her other books! It was full of suspense, drama, and a little romance. I love how she knows to balance everything that goes on in the story - the romance never overpowers the suspense, but the suspense doesn't destroy the little comedy throughout the story. Sandra Brown is a wonderful storyteller and I really loved the characters in this book. Amelia came across as incredibly sweet, and a wonderful mother, yet very strong after dealing with so many things. Dawson seemed like a fun guy that has been struggling after coming back from a war zone. The story kept me alert and curious about what was going to happen next; I had a hard time putting it down! And I was not expecting something that came out towards the end of the book! I think my jaw dropped a little haha (:

I feel like a better title for this would have been “Weekends with Bernie”

This was my first Sandra Brown story and I enjoyed it enough that I will definitely be reading more of her backlist. There were a few nice twists and the romance part of this romantic suspense story was fine. This story didn't blow me away, but it was entertaining and was easy to dip in and out of over the holiday.

Forty years ago there was a criminal compound reminiscent of Waco, Texas. Two of these domestic terrorists are still at large. Left behind at the crime scene was DNA from a newborn child. In current times a DNA hit has come up at a Southern murder trial. Dawson Scott is searching for his next assignment. As an Afghanistan war reporter he should have his pick of assignments, but is pushed by his friend and FBI informant to check out this story. He makes his way down South and gets embroiled in a whole new type of adventure. Amelia Wesson is the ex-wife of the missing and presumed dead marine vet Jeremy Wesson. Sparks fly and so do bullets in this romantic thriller from Brown. I love that I didn’t have everything figured out in the first hundred pages, because you want/need to keep going to find out if there will be a happy ending.
