The characters are very familiar to those of us living in NYC. They seem to fit into some types (or stereotypes) that are common to or specific to the city. Both natives and transplants.
I'm pretty sure the author was using a lot of symbolism, etc. that I just didn't bother with to figure out or concentrate on. The story begins pre-9/11 and 9/11 occurs near the end of the novel. I am assuming that was an underlying theme throughout, but I wasn't picking up on it too much in the first half of the book (although maybe I can blame pregnancy-brain).
I did like the book's conclusion. And I felt the characters were interesting and had some surprising depth to them. They seemed to build well through the book.
I debated 2 vs. 3 stars for this, and decided on 3 because I did enjoy her writing style.

I got this book free from a publisher, and I'm glad that I did, not one I would buy but an okay read.

Plodding and boring so I quit about 25% in. I know a big plot-turn was coming but I was unwilling to try and get there.
i stopped reading it. Maybe I will go back but this book failed to capture me. I found the characters to be false, impossible to relate to and eventually, I stopped caring.
Why is this novel about three friends trying to figure their lives out so fatphobic?

Terrific read
Rich with detail, a story that tumbles forward, building momentum, seamlessly controlled. I wish there were more of it to read!

Y'all, this was a rough time. It's super overwritten and kind of like someone swallowed a thesaurus and then burped up the most esoteric English words possible. And maybe I just didn't get it! It seemed to be reviewed really well as like a searing criticism and satire and something, and I just felt like everyone was too annoying to care that much about. (I was really too excited about the "everything explodes dramatically" part in the description and probably should have put this down without finishing it.) Bootie is a crazy nickname. And 9/11 jumpscares (unless I should have seen that coming??) just aren't my thing. Likely will not read this author again.
Graphic: Classism
Moderate: Bullying, Fatphobia, Infidelity, Toxic relationship, Violence, Toxic friendship, Abandonment, Alcohol
Minor: Body horror, Death, Emotional abuse, Sexual content, Blood
And I thought I loved em dashes. I initially wanted to read this since the cover reminded me of our recent trip to New York City and it pretty much ended up just being a fussy novel about entitled characters that I didn't connect with at all. However, I do still really love New York City, so there's that.
