Same thoughts as the last book, easy to read, engaging world and plot, like the characters but wishing we got way more of their back stories, interactions, just more character time

This is a somewhat reluctant 4 stars? The middle portion of the book dragged and was highly technical with the world's magic, plus there were some very gory bits that I skimmed through. That said, holy shit the ending. I figured something was going to happen with Gregor but I was not expecting specifically that. I will be grabbing the next installment because I want to know what new hijinx Sancia and Berenice get up to.

I love Gregor. Gregor WOULD TREAT ME RIGHT.

Robert Jackson Bennett hurts me again. I loved this book just as much as the first one. It’s so centered on theme, and the plotting is so tight. Now I figured out what the magic system reminded me of: coding. This book came to me at a time where I’m struggling with excel functions at work. Finally getting a formula to work is elating, and gives me the impression  that I am a modern scriver.

Shorefall’s pacing is a hundred times faster than Foundryside, most due to the time constraints in the book. This whole book maybe takes place in less than three days! Yet so much happens, and everything goes wrong, and everything goes right, then wrong again.

I especially love Bennett’s villains. The Big Bad was monologuing and I kept thinking: hmm, he’s not wrong tho? And that’s what make the villains sympathetic and understandable. Each baddie wants to right a wrong but uses distorted methods to do so.

As always, Bennett’s dialogue is superb. Sometimes what Sancia, Clef, or Orso say make me laugh out loud or screech.

I cannot wait for my library loan on Locklands to come.

I love it when a sequel goes above and beyond its predecessor. Shorefall raises the stakes so astronomically high, but manages to carry over all the best aspects you love from Foundryside—especially the characters that are the beating heart of this story. They've grown greatly since we last saw them, but they’ve all progressed naturally in incredibly satisfying ways. If you liked Foundryside, strap yourself in for a wild ride with Shorefall!
