The plot of this book intrigued me so much and the cover was stunning. Of course I wanted to read it right away. Sadly, the book got more and more confusing the more I read it. I almost DNFed this book who knows how many times before finishing it.

This book packs a more emotional punch than I was expecting given my indifference towards the narrative structure.

I received an ecopy of this book through Netgalley; however, my opinions are my own.

I did not expect that.
Amazingly weird, but also breathtakingly sad.

Loved the idea of this book, I loved the little gay romance in the corner, I loved the cover, but overall this was quite a boring book for me in the end it was ok I guess

The idea of this book was great. The summary is really intriguing and I couldn't wait to find out what was going on.

Sadly, I'm half way in and I still haven't found out what's going on.

This book is written in a style that very rarely works for me; Everyone But Protag Knows What's Happening And No One Will Explain. A couple of them pass it off as 'we don't want to influence your reactions' but most of them seem to be not telling her because they're not telling her, and the story itself wasn't intriguing enough to hold my attention without understanding *why* all the weird stuff is happening.

The style was lovely; the language was great and the descriptions were amazing. I could feel the desert heat and see the creepy street. The section where Rose muses that, even though she knows there are woods along a certain road, she never sees them in her memories, really struck me. Memory is not certain but we all act as though it is.

The plot is clever, the way it was structured just wasn't for me. I hope it sells really well.

Something was missing for me. Some elements of this were left vague - maybe a little too vague? I’m not sure how well the flashbacks worked; part of me thinks that a prologue would have set the reader up better. You could still do the flashbacks, but especially with the magical realism element you could actually make them more obscured or patchy but more impactful.

YA novel featuring magical realism to describe the manifestation of PTSD after a tragic event that leads to the death of a best friend.
The beginning had me hooked. The middle was mostly confusing. And then connections were being made from the past to present with a very thoughtful resolution in the last 50 pages.
I very much appreciated author’s note of content about certain trigger warnings in the book at the beginning and the author’s resources in the back regarding trauma, PTSD, and suicide hotline.
It’s a great book, or “life preserver” for a teen struggling to be able to wade through thoughts and feelings after a traumatic event.
