I started out really liking this book. The characters were well developed. The military jargon was familiar and not over done. As the book moves through the main character's childhood, the plot is engaging but gradually becomes a bit incredulous. The final third of the book drags on a bit through her young adulthood. When the final conclusion happens it spoiled the entire book for me. The resolution of the 'mystery' is too far fetched to be believable in any way and the discovery of the resolution is too ambiguous. It was very disappointing.
Worth the 800+ pages! The story is intriguing and the characters are so well done. The last half kept me flipping through and was hard to put down. It has humor and tragedy and suspense...all there together. Very good book!
I wish there was a 2 1/2 rating. This book took quite a while to catch my interest, and I almost gave up several times, but decided to plod on through. Once it did, it was difficult to put down throughout most of the rest, until the final few chapters, and then I felt it starting dragging again. The author style of writing gets bogged down in too many words to say what could have been said much simpler. Nice character development, and you really felt you knew everyone in the book, but I must say I was not expecting the outcome.
4.5 stars rounded down to 4 stars.
This was a difficult book to get through, not because of its content, but because of the pacing. The story moved slowly, particularly in the first half before the trial, and it’s a very long book, which made it a bit of a chore to read at times. But the time spent was worth the reward, as it was an excellently written piece of literary fiction. I’m not much of a history/war buff, so that took some pushing to get through, but I took away a lot from the book. It was obviously very well researched as well. It honestly felt like something you might read for a grade 12 AP English class, but I didn’t mind that so much, given how well the characters, landscape, etc. were developed.

3.5 It was a long book 800+ pages, but it didn't feel like it.
I ended up abandoning this book about 1/5 through it, although the writing and rhythm is some of the best that I've ever read. The author is truly incredible - which makes the book powerful and mesmerizing. For me, unfortunately, the subject hits too close to home (trigger) and I can't continue it any further. I would definitely read other books from his author, depending upon the subject.
Canada - One of the best novels I've ever read. The story moves from a sunny beginning through some troubling times. It's very carefully written (not in a studied way; the author has clearly thought out how to write about disturbing topics without sensationalizing); the book is breathtaking, really.
I think it's best to read it without knowing where the story is going, because you wonder at first whether you're actually comprehending the action. Read the book description - which is really a review - if you want the general story; read a couple of reviews if you want to know the disturbing subject matter. (I really want a spoiler box!!!)

Hard to rate this one - there were times I really didn't like it - at all. There are many layers, and by the end you needed all of them, but some of them drag when you're in them. It's amazing how well the author has "nailed" each of the different perspectives/voices.
