The Dollhouse

3.99 AVERAGE

Horrible researched and edited.

1. Aspergers has been outdated for years now and the way it is used in the book is very ableist and weird.
2. Every child was emotionally and developmentally stunted. 14 year olds do not act like that. 5 year olds do not act like that. I had to go back and double check the twins age because they were acting like 9 year olds.
3. 14 year olds are going into HIGH SCHOOL. Not middle school.

There's more...why is there more.

Excellent writing and over-the-top suspense!

Sara Ennis is another author with a twisted mind that I’m adding to my favorite author list! The imaginations of some authors are both impressive and terrifying at the same time and she is one of those authors. I’d be concerned if I was living in the same house!

The Dollhouse—Book #1 in the Duality series—has a chilling premise and multiple twists that come from left field. Be warned, this well-written but tragic story centers around child abduction and abuse and can be hard for some to read.

The suspense was over-the-top as these children are exposed to unimaginable situations by the monster who abducted them. They never know when he’ll make an appearance and what horror lies in wait. They are now only dolls for his repulsive amusement.

I wish I hadn’t put this book off for so long! There are just too many books to read. I have the prequel, Two Lies & a Truth, which I hope to get to very soon. And then I hope to read the next two books in this spine-tingling series soon!

Thank you to Sara Ennis for providing this gifted ARC through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

So glad I have next one already- I cannot wait to read more of this story!

Bud and Angel's mom goes on a trip - leaving her 14 yo twins home alone. Shortly after Shine leaves, Jennifer grabs Angel. Bud races to save her, only to be taken as well.
They are forced to acclimate to The Dollhouse - school time, meal time, and so much humiliation. Along with the First Doll, Olivia.
Peter, Olivia's father, uses his wealth and contacts to help other parents with lost children, even Shine. His obsession pushes Peter to keep Olivia's case open, in the public, desperate for any clues.
And Alfred - the man who owns the Dolls.
Just a chilling, horror, terrifying novel. Well done!

Hmmm… I am not sure this reading experience for me went as it did for so many others based on the high ratings I see for it. I feel badly, but this is my own opinion.

To start, the basis of the plot is interesting, and it really should be a dark thrilling book, but I just felt sad all of the time. The villain has such a traumatic backstory that even as he commits horrible acts against his victims, the pain of his past that is made evident throughout the book makes it hard to just totally hate him unless you’re as heartless and cruel as those who previously tortured him. It does give him, then, a more multi-layered dimension than being a single-note bad guy. But the man is so obviously suffering from years of psychological and physical abuse, much at the hands of his family, that I just really despised his evil and seemingly psychopathic sister and his negligent parents more.

I also just felt sad, and in some ways annoyed, that all of the women in this book, besides the sadistic sister, were portrayed as weak or helpless. Characters Angel and Olivia cat fight like middle school girls in the midst of their abduction, to the point Angel is even jealous at Olivia’s easy menstrual cycle?? All of the females - even the toddler Grace and moody Jennifer - fight over captive Bud’s affection. All of the mother figures are dead so it just leaves the celebrity dad to save the day. I just did not buy into some of the sterotypes of the bitchy, queen bee Olivia, etc. and finally appreciated the introduction of the strong and fierce-minded Marnie.

And gah… in the end when “poor” Peter is lamenting that he’s just not Angel’s favorite, though he’s the financial/foster home father savior, and that she seems to like her Wonder Bread toast more than his cushy comforts… strange and narcissistic. The representation of men and women in this story really sidelined the plot for me.

Lastly, there are some editing errors in my copy which made for jumbled reading at times. I think one reveal that was meant to be a huge eye-popping twist was too easy to assume from the beginning. And though I appreciated the layered development of the Alfred character - he tries to do some good, tries in vain to help himself in his awareness of his very tragic past, and also does very many awful, detestable things - the overall book had too many other components with which I failed to enjoy.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

4.5 stars

This book will suck you right in, I did not want to put it down! It's so well-written, the characters were completely realistic, the story was so vivid in my mind! Not to mention, it took me a good 5 minutes to pick my jaw up off the floor when I was hit with a big twist that I definitely did NOT see coming!

When I finished this book, I immediately started it's sequel The Hunted: Sins of the Father, and so far I don't want to put it down either!
