4.5 I really really enjoyed this book!!! Spooky, gothic, and sapphic. It was giving Crimson Peak vibes which I loved.

I love the themes of breaking cycles and generational trauma and the corruption of power. And how men suck

This didn’t take on the form I expected (for example, the Knives Out comp title made me think it would be funnier), but Kate Alice Marshall does horror so well: descriptive, eerie, playing on real fears, giving us character-driven scaries rather than jumps.

I also just really liked Bryony. Give me a hot bisexual witch who’s a little sarcastic but also nurturing any day.

These Fleeting Shadows was such a fun, eerie read. It’s got that perfect mix of gothic atmosphere, family secrets, and a main character you can’t help but root for as things get darker and stranger. I loved how creepy and unsettling the whole vibe was without ever feeling overdone, it kept me hooked the entire time. If you’re into haunted houses, weird inheritances, and stories that keep you guessing, this one’s definitely worth picking up.
