There's something about these gothic books that are a little too slow for me for a while and then completely hook me at the end. The ending/reveal/twist was sooooo good that it made me forget any mediocre thoughts I had about the beginning/middle. I would 100% read this again just for that moment when all the pieces finally fit together to create such a satisfying ending.

Had this on my reading shelf for months, but I just can't go on with this one...

This took a while to grasp me but once it took off I was hooked! Unique premise, surprisingly emotional.
I wish there was a more button up epilogue but overall great read.

Kate Alice Marshall!!!! How does your brain create these amazing and insane worlds?! I love getting immersed into your books, and I love the confusion I feel as I put together the pieces you sneakily give us readers.

I had this book on my TBR for awhile and I was so happy when my library finally aquired a copy. One of my favorite things that can be featured in books is a gothic setting. In These Fleeting Shadows we are following Helen Vaughn as she and her mother are brought back to their ancestral home, The Harrows, following the death of her grandfather. She does not know what to expect because she has hardly any memories of her extended family. Her mother has kept her from them and rarely talks about her childhood and memories. Their short visit soon becomes longer when forces arise that make it so Helen cannot leave. These is a very ark and atmospheric book that was riveting. The last 50 or so pages I felt were a little dragged out which dropped it down to a four star. I have not read anything else by this author but now I am interested to look into her backlist.

I really enjoyed a lot of aspects about this. The gothy nature, the horror, the paranormal-ish aspects. That was all really well done. I enjoyed some of the characters, and I was kept guessing throughout the book. The one thing that stopped this from being a four star, was...the ending, unfortunately. I understood the message, of what makes a monster human, and I understood why it was what it was....but it just....made it seem lackluster, to me.
