I love books where narrators keep you on your toes—And Then You Were Gone certainly delivered! This one kept me guessing until the very end.
This was a very exciting read. I loved the fact that the main character is bipolar, it added a layer of complexity and while I am no expert, I thought it was done really well, especially towards the end as the story reaches its climax and the truth is revealed. This is a great, fast-paced thriller that fans of the genre will most certainly enjoy.
Emily and her boyfriend Paolo decide to spend a romantic night on a sailboat on the lake, despite Emily's hesitancy given her inability to swim. When she wakes up sick and groggy in the morning, she realizes Paolo is missing... and thus begins her attempt to unravel the mystery surrounding his disappearance. With the police investigating her and symptoms of her bipolar disorder increasing in severity, Emily doesn't have much time before things are going to go really wrong...
I loved that this book was written by a psychologist, because Emily's descent into mania felt so accurately portrayed. While I figured out the twists early on, I still enjoyed going along for the journey with Emily and watching her make some really questionable decisions along the way. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future (don't let me down, keep writing!) especially if he continues to write characters like Cal and Emily.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this book!

This book is a page-turner!
I actually fell asleep reading it because I didn’t want to put it down and kept saying “one more chapter...”
I love how Jacobs had a bipolar protagonist but didn’t make her condition the whole of his story. Bipolar type 2 representation is important and I loved that. Though, at times I felt the main character was a type 1. Just goes to show how much mania can effect people differently.
As for the plot, I figured out the twist about halfway through but I was still madly turning pages to find out how the characters find out and what the consequences are.
I’m so excited Jacobs has another book coming out next month because I need more of his writing in my life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this psychological thriller. I love a good unreliable narrator. Emily What a time to read a book about Viruses and the spread them. It made it incredibly relevant for todays world. I felt like I knew what was going to happen, so I wasn't surprised on how it ended. But I enjoyed the ride of Emily chasing after the truth in a dangerous world, of scientist on a mission!
This book got my attention quickly, within the first few chapters I was all in. Would have been a 5 star but the ending seemed predictable and really lacked the suspense it had at the beginning.

RJ Jacobs sure knows how to write characters who are absolutely infuriating in their idiocy. But it somehow works.
Also, spoiler alert from my previous update Paolo IS a giant asshole. Shocking.

It's taken me a month to finish a book that isn't even 300 pages. This book was slow, bland, and just generic. I just didn't care for the "mystery" of who killed who in this story. There are no surprises in this book that keeps you guessing. This mystery was a paint by numbers .
Thanks to Netgalley and my library for this book. Blah.
