Technology can be used for bad things if we make giant assumptions, wowee

As fascinating and comprehensive as this book is, it is equally dense and academically written. I found it somewhat of a slog to get through, even while captivated by the potential futures Bostrum describes.

It's a testament to the speed of AI research that this book is already out of date on very specific points of the state of the art (see: AlphaGo).

Gave me more existential dread than I ever thought possible.

As comprehensive as it is terrifying.

Will re-read once I know more about the subject (given that I haven't been turned into paper clips by then).

Avoid if you enjoy sleeping well at night.

The author spends a good portion of his time on human intelligence, not machine intelligence. When he finally does get around to machine intelligence, it is focused on what could or might happen, but very little about how it could happen. There is lots (and LOTS) of speculation about possible, hypothetical, potential, theoretical, etc. etc. etc. futures. I'd rather read Asimov for a clearer (and definitely more entertaining) picture of what true machine intelligence might actually look like and how it might affect human lives.

I read about 1/4 of this book, really tried to get through it since it was a book club book but just couldn't. This seemed to be written for neurologists and neuroscientists, which I am certainly not. Regardless it was incredibly hard to follow and boring at that. I bought the Audible CliffsNotes version of it that was 45 minutes long and I found even that exhaustively boring.

Min första filosofiska bok jag läst. Rätt tung bitvis, men intressant. Han har tänkt en hel del på AI den där Nick :)

A technical philosophy book that deconstructs the arguments around use and development of AI as it develops to solve more general problems. This is the starting key reference for thinking about general intelligence and it goes very far toward being a complete analysis of the subject. Many of the assumptions we make around AI safety are debunked with this text, but ideas for alternatives are discussed, many new areas of research identified.
The only downside to the text other than density of content is that there are many underlying assumptions made to the discussion that are not always clear. Some of these, I disagree with so this text is an incomplete reflection of what I believe.
