For a thriller book, it was quite well-written. One of the things that I really enjoyed about this story was the rich cultural integration. The history and cultural impact that swords play in Japan was thoroughly researched and exquisitely implemented. The plot, although a little standard, was nicely presented. The transition from one chapter to the next was smooth, making the novel an easy read. When I picked it up, I didn't realize that it was a part of a series. In all honesty, as far as I could tell, the novel makes for a wonderful stand alone piece. I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in Japanese culture since it's so heavily applied. Not a bad summer read in the least.
