1/15/21-Came back for a reread after finishing Julie’s new book, Blood Heir. Derek watching Julie come up on her horse and confront harassing male shapeshifters was a bit of an a-ha moment.

Part of my covid-19 stay at home reread of the series. Not much more than a side adventure for Julie and Derek but we get into Derek’s POV which was interesting and some hints here of Julies role as Kate’s Herald. 3.5 to 4

Is this going to be a series?!?

Because I’m all about some Dereck and Julie. I’ve been shipping them since book 2.

I really enjoyed this, it's fast paced and fun. Ilona Andrews somehow always manages to strike the right balance for short stories- while this was a side story about secondary characters it didn't feel that way. We've always seen Julie and Derek through Kate's eyes- and she's always seen them more as children than fully independent badass adults- which from this story they clearly are, it's nice to get inside there head- Julie has grown so much from the young girl that Kate rescued and it's really fun to see what she has been getting up to behind Kate's back (so much).

It's a side story to the Kate Daniels world and I don't know how well it would work as a stand alone model.

Audio Feb. 2018: The audio was nice. Narrator Jeffrey Kafer did well with Derek and Julie.

~ 5 Magic Stars ~

Magic Stars is a novella in the Kate Daniels series and one you don’t want to skip; because so much is revealed about two fan-favorite characters.

Before picking this one up you should be up to date on the Kate Daniels series; because the author does recap some important events.

This story leads Derek and Julie to team up and they make an excellent team, maybe something more will develop. Only time will tell. I have always enjoyed how detailed the author gets in her stores and the mythology brought into this one was great.

We finally get to see into Derek’s head. Many fans, especially me, have been concerned for the Boy Wonder. As things are going he’s in a dark place and we finally get to see how much harder his struggles are. We learn so much in Magic Stars.

Last, we learn what Julie has been up to. Besides her lessons with Kate, learning to use her tomahawk, she’s occasionally hang out with Roland when Kate’s not looking. Oh My!!

A lot is revealed and gears you up for the next installment Kate #9, so enjoy! Fangirl and boy yourself out on this amazing novella.

It was exactly what I expected from a novella in this series. Packed with some action, some violence, and some romance. I loved getting to see more of Julie? I thought it would be from her perspective but Derek has always been one of the most interesting characters in the series.
