This feels like an attempt to branch into a more traditonally told narrative within the Edge universe while also expounding on what we knew about it before hand. Both of these aspects are handled with grace and care as a more well-rounded core cast of characters takes center-stage. The use of the personal drama here, particularly with Xanth pulls you right in - especially as all the pieces begin to connect to the Twig's trilogy. I especially love the choice to focus in on Rook as a librarian and the sections where instead of action adventure or horror like the previous heroes may have encountered, Rook is often more curious and intrigued and observing.

I think this is set about 50 years after the Twig sequence. Interesting how things tie in.

As before with this series, I am often surprised by just how dark the stories get. Nobody is safe and anything can happen. That being said, the story itself did drag a little for me in that it retraced a lot of the ground covered in the Beyond the Deepwoods as Rook travels the Edge encountering weird and often dangerous things and environments. Fortunately, this story does pick up after a while and by the end has nicely picked up and was far more engaging. Chris Riddle's illustrations as always add something to the story. Full of imagination and adventure.

I found this to be a really fun read. I loved the characters even those who only made brief appearances and I espeically liked the names of the creatures. The only reason I am giving this book 4 stars and not 5 is because this was my first Edge chronicle story and I feel that there were things I would have understood better and added to the story if I had read the earlier books. This however is no fault of the author or the story. I am definitely going to give this series a go from book 1
