'Dark Knights: Metal: The Nightmare Batmen' is part of the DC Comics mega event. This is the third volume I've read and I feel like it's the strongest of the titles.

All the Earths have all the heroes. With the coming of Barbatos, Batman has been corrupted. This volume shows all the ways he is corrupted by conquering and using other heroes and villains. First, he becomes the Red Death by taking the Speed Force from Flash. Then he (or rather she) becomes The Drowned by conquering Atlantis. There are others, but my favorite might be The Dawnbreaker, which is what happens when an evil Batman takes on a Green Lantern Ring. The ringleader is the Batman/Joker amalgam The Man Who Laughs.

These stories are really dark, and I really liked them. I like the idea of a Batman who has been pushed over the edge and uses his mind to become a killer. The origin of Batman is in most of these stories, and it has driven him to revenge, not justice. I liked the various artists. The last story with the Detective Chimp feels like a weird aside after the preceding darkness, but it was ok.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

I like this collection of the origins of these Dark Knights. I find the potential falls that could've happened to Batman --- thankfully our Batman is the best Batman... so none of this happens.

I'm pretty sure this collection of issues by various writers and artists is the height of Scott Snyder's Dark Knights: Metal event. Snyder's own main Metal storylines are a hot mess, but when others were given the chance to write short origin stories for each of the evil versions of Batman, they managed to shine a light in the Dark.

These were some very fun tie ins, I like how the Nightmare Batmen's evil origins coincide with them attacking a member of the Justice League. None of these felt like cash grabs or superfluous to the overall story.

Can I just say I LOVE this? Getting the backgrounds on the Dark Knights, how the mimic Batman but also the justice league? The stories are great and strung together well, you get to learn the history how they all came together. I do not like the bat who laughed; Only probably because of just how dark and sinister he is and has no care for anything. But these are Batman's worse fears/nightmares of himself. We get to see them, and how they came to be our bad guys in this set.
The artwork is stunning! Even when drawing out monsters, certain aspects of belts and outfits it's all done together carefully where you aren't missing it in one panel and the other you are. I love how the Dawn Breaker's single page looks it's creepy enough but also fits his image rather well. My favorite out of them would be Bryce, the bat-mariner of the knights. There's something about her that makes you understand her story of why she did what she did and everything?

It's a dark book, but this arc isn't light at all and it's not suppose to be gentle and hopeful. We're going into the Dark Multiverse and seeing how all the knights were gathered and why they were chosen. It's appealing in a the way you get to know your villians, so you can hate or love them. I would recommend this book to my friends.

What if every fear you ever had spawned a new reality dedicated to that fear playing out? And what if those fears then escaped into our world?

That's the premise of Dark Nights Metal, where all of Bruce Wayne's private fears and insecurities have manifested themselves into a number of nightmare Batmen-versions of each Justice League member.

This tie-in series explores the backstories of each of those nightmare Batmen, while also adding some contemporary scenes fleshing out the main events of the Metal plotline.

I was highly impressed with these books. Each takes a credible fear of Batman's and gives free reign to various ways that Batman might be pushed over the edge and compelled to take the power of a Justuce League member to address that fear. For instance, Batman's fear that, despite his best efforts, he won't be able to be there for everyone all the time? Why, let's strap the Flash to a batmobile modeled after the Cosmic Treadmill and drive into the speed force!

The ideas range from the bonkers to the heartfelt, but they're all wildly creative and fun thought exercises. His fears of intimacy, trust, his friends, his family, the trauma of possibly losing his father a second time (in Alfred)... all of them feel grounded and true to the character, but where the books really shine is how each is tied in to a different Justice League member or their power.

Great stuff. The Cyborg/Murder Machine issue is a standout.
