The beginning was great but as the book went on, it became very difficult to understand if you were not familiar with the original tales. The deeper meaning from CS takes a while to parse through

This book truly belongs in 6 star territory. One of the most rewarding reads - it is hard, emotional, dark and dreary for the first 3/4ths of the book. Orual’s character is so well developed and is one of the most powerful first person narratives I can think of. She is desperately unlikeable - a true slave to her selfishness with a twisted view of love. The prose, the plot, the twists, the allegory, the descriptions, the redemption… it’s so grandiose and awe-inspiring that I had a hard time falling asleep after finishing. It’s also haunting - I am so impressed by how well Lewis develops an aversion within you to Ungit, even down to the choice of the name itself. So much resonated within me - love can be so selfish. How easy it is to make ourselves believe what we want to believe - to deceive ourselves into positions of righteousness when our hearts are hard as stone. And yet. A mostly selfish love still had enough pure components to tie Psyche to Orual so that Orual could bear her burdens - we all have a piece of Divine Love within us.
There's reading the Space Trilogy because you liked the Narnia books, and then there's reading Till We Have Faces because you liked the other two. It's a much bigger leap, in my opinion.
