Intrigued by the contemporary take on vampires, stayed for the exploration of generational trauma.

It takes a bit to get to know Louise because there's a lot to unpack. There were a lot of hurdles that struck me, mirroring personal experiences that amped my emotional investment. Running from your problems, and then suddenly embodying that stagnated state? RIP. I do love the metaphysical side of vampires, and, yeah I've considered how inconvenient it would be in the present day. Mike Chen's take is believable, it's scary. The finale, I thought, was unexpected but satisfying. Really got me rooting for Louise, and Ian too.

(Still waiting to be turned so I can binge read or watch anime in a basement--joking, of course...unless...)

Louise was turned into a vampire in the '80s at a punk show. Vampire life is not all it's cracked up to be. She is a hard time finding a band to play with. She makes ends meet skimming off blood bags off the hospital where she works as a janitor. One night some distant relatives show up at her house and need help, and Louise meets a kid who is just as much of a misfit as she is.

This book was heart felt and touching. It's a story about grief and loss and the things that we do to prevent that. It's also a story about living your life and survival mode and being unable to see past what you need to do to make ends meet.

I enjoyed it. Lola the Corgi was adorable. I would have loved more Corgi honestly.
The first part of the book felt a little slow to me but this could have been when I read it and the mood that I was in.

It picked up and it turned into a lovely book that I think I might even reread.
