One of the most boring books about a serial killer i have ever read. The character of Elsie was the only interesting part of the book.

Thomas Brogan is a serial killer on the run who takes refuge from the police in the connecting attic spaces of 4 unsuspecting homes... time for him to have some fun.

This was @charls.pages and I’s next buddy read and it was such a good read! I loved the plot idea and it was the right pace and vibe for me.

What I particularly enjoyed about the book was although it was heavily focused on Brogan hiding out alone in the attic space, the story was kept entertaining due to his demented conversations with his inner monologue. Brogan is clearly incredibly unhinged (for reasons we gradually find out about throughout the book) but his inner voice is almost the ‘worst’ side of him whereas we see flickers of compassion and kindness from Brogan at times when he is around certain characters of the book.

Although it is a story about a serial killer, there isn’t an abundance of gore and killings although Brogan and his inner voice do reminisce and tease the reader with conversations about their past kill highlights. I don’t feel this is a detriment at all as the story is very well done and keeps you on edge enough throughout.

My favourite character, and I think Charlotte would agree, was Elsie! Such a sweet, vulnerable old woman who really surprises the reader and without going into any spoilers, I felt the ending was very satisfying and my feelings and any decisions I had about what should happen to Brogan was taken out of my hands thankfully by a very good surprise end!

Overall I really enjoyed this book and got through it pretty quickly as it was such an easy read and I found myself not able to put it down! So next time you notice any food in your fridge go missing or things have moved around, maybe have a check in your attic space...

Do you want to be scared senseless? Do you want to feel paranoid that someone is watching you from inside your own house? Do you want a book that feels so real that you start checking how much food is in your cupboards?

Then this is the book for you!!

This is one of the most tense books I have read in quite some time. Brogan is a serial killer on the run. He finds an empty house to hide in and then discovers that he can go into other homes through connected attic/loft spaces.

What follows is a confusing kind of book as you don't really want him to be caught! Who in their right mind roots for the serial killer?! Me, it seems! While Brogan is a dangerous man, the author manages to flesh him out so that he is so much more than the crimes he commits. You feel sympathy and understanding for what has made him who he is. Well I did at least...

The impressive thing about this book is that it is based in a very limited setting but it doesn't feel stale or lacking in plot. Brogan is able to access the houses while residents are out/sleeping and the rest of the time he listens or watches from above. It is interesting how he decides which residents to mess with. As the book progesses, more and more about him makes sense.

We also find out a great deal about the lives of the residents he focuses on; a married couple and an elderly woman. They have their secrets and backstories too. All of this combined makes for a compelling and engrossing thriller.

This is the first I have read by this author and it certainly will not be the last.

It's very hard to unsettle me especially when reading but for some reason this unnerved me. I think my husband got fed up of me asking "what if's"? as I was reading it. The idea to me felt very original and the characters were rich. I was both tense and thrilled and didn't want it to end.

I really loved this book.
To follow the serial killer and actually feel protective of him was a very weird concept.

It kept me on the edge of my seat, I loved the short chapters that wanted you to continue reading.
