A serial killer book from the killer’s POV? Sign me up

Very interesting way of story telling and the whole mystery which involved several layers and people too.

This was a good standalone novel. Gripping in places although some of it did seem to drag on but all in all a good enjoyable read.

WOW! Review to come.

I’m certainly in the minority when it comes to this book, I just didn’t think it was that great. I think maybe with all the hype I had expected something amazing and it just wasn’t that for me. The premise is amazing, it just fell really short. It was so slow at times, at 71% I was literally just finishing it for the sake of it; I did not want to hear another description of what Brogan ate. This was a solid 2 stars throughout, I settled on 2.5 purely for the last few pages which actually were gripping to read. I’ve rounded this up to 3 for my review but I do feel this is generous on this occasion. Obviously a lot of people have really loved ‘The Resident’ but unfortunately I was not one of them.

Thank you Netgalley & Profile Books.

I picked up my latest read, The Resident by David Jackson, on a whim when in Tesco, having never seen it before. Then it popped up on my Twitter feed, with the tweeter in question loving it but questioning her choice to start it at 10pm at night when it is about a serial killer living in your attic!

I took that on board and started it on a bright and sunny afternoon, and just didn’t put it down! Read in one sitting, this is a perfect example of a page turner.

Serial killer Thomas Brogan is on the run, and decides to hide inside an abandoned end terrace house. Some snooping around tells him that he can get into the other houses via a gap in the loft spaces, giving him access to the other three properties on the terrace. He decides to have some ‘fun’ with the residents.

Brogan is quite disturbed, shown rather basically in the fact that he talks to another version of himself in his head. Think of how Gollum talks to himself in the Lord of The Rings films (if you’ve seen them). The ‘other’ voice brings some humour to the story, often ‘saying’ one liners that Brogan wouldn’t say out loud.

This novel borders on horror, with grim violence, disturbing voyeurism and emotional manipulation, so the humour is desperately needed sometimes for a bit of a lift.

A dark and grim horror, I really enjoyed reading, but doubt I’d read it again.

This is the type of thriller book that I absolutely adore. The Resident manages to hook you from beginning to end. It's told from the point of view of a serial killer and it's dark and twisted. It's just so refreshing to read a dark thriller with that kind of perspective. The Resident is full of twists and manages to be both creepy and intriguing.

Unique story that captivated me from the first line. It's extremely dark and a bit gruesome at times, so it's definitely not a book for everyone, but if you're interested in being in the mind of a serial killer then definitely pick up The Resident

If this book does not win any awards I will eat my hat! Fantastic compelling and unique storyline that will give you the Heeby jeebys! Read it super quick and the twist at then was blinding! 10 stars!!!!

The premise of the story I did enjoy, but I felt it was slow in some cases, there was a lot of waiting around for what Thomas might do next to the couple. The main dialogue of the book is mainly Thomas and the voice inside his head. As Thomas almost starts to feel human again, feel sympathy and caring for others, the voice in his head reminds him of why he is the way he is.

The ‘endgame’ for Thomas was also anti-climactic I felt, I was expecting more as they built the story up throughout the book, an infamous killer who commits heinous acts, but in the end it felt the whole ‘final game’, as he called it, ending much too quickly for what was built up.

Note to self if I move check for gaps between houses in the loft! This was exactly what I wanted it to be creepy, spine tingling and made me suspicious of all the noises in my house. While that may not seem like a good time I love books like this.
I also enjoyed that it was from the serial killers pov and seeing the thought process and justifications of their actions.
It's creepy but I like it.
