Part of the “Maker Kids” series, this book explains how sound works, the categories of musical instruments, and ideas for making your own musical instruments. Projects include making a simple shaker as well as a more complex diddley bow. Links to more projects online are available as well, including a link to download a file that can be used to 3D Print a thumb piano.

This book gives some excellent explanations about the history of music, the kinds of musical instruments there are, and how sound works. The presentation is interesting and engaging, with lots of colorful photographs and text boxes with good and relevant information in them. However, I was disappointed with the selection of projects in the book. There are only two step-by-step projects listed, one of which is not high tech at all, and the other of which looks very complex and expensive to me even as an adult. I was expecting at least 3-4 projects that would be more accessible to kids.
