I'm genuinely so confused by the high ratings this book has received. the writing style was giving wattpad to me, like actively bad. there was no story, things just happen one after the other in a way that is boring and a chore to read. I did not like or care for any of the characters. none of them had unique voices, the only differences being arbitrary things like her grandma using "doll" at the end of every sentence.
also, what the fuck was that romance? liz was 15 when she died, and she meets owen soon after. owen was 26 when he died, and he's been in elsewhere (aging backwards) for 9 years, making him physically appear 17. but the book doesn't do really anything to imply he's less mature than the 35 years old he would've been. he still has all 26 years of his earth memories, plus 9 years of elsewhere ones. if anything the book shows that them aging backwards doesn't affect their memories until around 2 years old. the main example being the captain of the ship liz arrived on appeared to be 7, but he told her he'd been the captain for like 100 years. she even said he seemed to have the maturity of an old man. doesn't that tell the viewer that owen is essentially a 35 year old man "falling in love" with a 15 year old? during the book his wife from earth dies & liz is upset because of how "adult" she is compared to her. bc owens wife is THIRTY FIVE and she is FIFTEEN. she acts very much like an annoying child too. he's a freak! not a single character comments on this age gap, not even his wife who has arrived in the afterlife to find out her husband is dating a 15 year old.
the concept of aging backwards in the afterlife until you return to earth is an interesting concept, but the book does absolutely nothing interesting with it. I found it boring and poorly written. gabrielle zevin this does not make me think any less of your genius, tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow is still one of my favourite books. I have simply learned my lesson not to trust her whole discography 🙏

I have never in my life wanted to DNF a book so bad. I don't even know if I enjoyed the ending or the fact that it ended. This book was challenging in that it was a challenge to pick up again after I put it down. If I thought Memoirs of a Teenaged Amnesiac was bad...
The romance in here was horrific. Every single instance of it. They got together while two decades apart. Don't even get me started on her grandmother. This is literally my worst nightmare in novel form. I liked the younger brother and the friend from the cruise ship so I'll give 0.25 for each. Outside of that it would make me very happy to never see any of these characters again.

At first I wasn't invested in reading through the lens of a 15 year old girl, and I was not invested in finishing the book at all. However, Liz grows up even as she de-ages throughout the story. She lives a whole life after death! This book is what The Midnight Library tried to be, and while that's also a good book I would recommend Elsewhere over The Midnight Library.

What a touching read. I think the concept of dying and aging backwards in the afterlife is a very interesting and unique take. It's like... living a second life as yourself before going on to the next and starting anew.

loved this story, it took me back to my YA reading days, a big chapter in my life where both my love for reading and my library grew 💖
