This is petty of me but the only reason this book lost a star was because it's a young adult novel. But otherwise, wow, what a book. It was so hard to not cry at the end because I finished it at work and couldn't, but I wanted to. It was beautiful and creative and significant. It made me less scared of dying, even dying young. And I hope that's what afterlife is actually like, because then I have hope.

I would recommend this book to anyone dealing with grief and the loss of a person or pet. Maybe if I read this when Rocco died, I wouldn't have cried as hard. I hope he's with a good family up there.

Holy wow. This book snuck up on me. I loved the afterworld (Elsewhere) in the book and how it was literally a new lease on life for those who died. Liz was great. It was really cool to see how a character "grew up" after they died.

I read this is high school during a period of time when teenagers where checking their immortality - or lack there of. this book hit me like a ton of bricks and I think it’s because my entire schooling up to that point was in a catholic school setting. Heaven was always taught in a biblical sense without room for creativity or self understanding beyond cherubs and pearly gates with Saint Peter judging your earthly being like the thumbs up or down of a Roman emperor - ironic, I know.

The story follows a fifteen year old girl who dies and subsequently finds herself in “Elsewhere” besieged by colorful characters, an immense feeling of loss, and the yearning to turn sixteen, yet age reverses in this version. It is a unique story of memory, love, friendship, and grief that is unlike anything I had read or have read since. While the story may be YA - it’s a mature story for YA - and not everyone’s favorite, it is one of mine because it came into my life when I needed a dose of creativity, humor, and appreciation.
