The most interesting part was Elsewhere, which mainly just served as the backdrop. I wanted more about how it worked and the interesting dynamics. I absolutely loved Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and it's impressive how much Zevin's writing has developed since 2005. Ultimately, this was a sweet coming of age story that was just fine.
This had an interesting premise, but I'm not sure it completely lived up to what it could have been. I especially felt that it the writing got rougher towards the end, like she was rushing to just be done with it.
Interesting, mildly comforting premise. Need to think on this one before I settle on a permanent star rating.

Och det, i sin tur, innebär: inget körkort. Inga barn. Att aldrig bli myndig. Att Liz aldrig kommer att få bröst. Och att hon, med största sannolikhet, kommer vara därifrån innan någon annan i hennes familj hamnar i Elsewhere. Och i samband med den insikten inser Liz att hon bara vill dö. Att livet inte är värt att leva när framtidsutsikterna är så mörka. Problemet är ju bara att hon redan är död.
Jag både gillade, och inte gillade den här berättelsen. Ibland var den så otroligt fjantig. Dåliga skämt, konstiga reaktioner och stereotypa "komiska" karaktärer (ni vet såna som är tänkta att vara jätteroliga men som istället inte alls är det). Och lägg där till djur som kan prata, och otillräckliga förklaringar på hur det baklängesgående livet i Elsewhere fungerar (hur kan till exempel föraren till SS Nile vara över 100 år men samtidigt Owens farfar?). Jag är lite förvirrad efter bokupplevelsen. Både väldigt bra, och väldigt lame, på samma gång. Vilket kanske egentligen är något positivt. Jag hoppas boken kommer växa med tiden.

If you are reading all of Zevin’s work like me because you loved Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow I might skip this one, her first book. She’s definitely grown a ton as a writer (I am very glad she stuck with it). Characters felt less fleshed out, lots of telling and weird pacing.
This is a book about the afterlife in which people age backwards until they are a baby and reincarnate- but keep their memories. There was some weird stuff with the mc who died as a teen being in a romantic relationship a guy who died at 35 but had aged backwards to his teens but just the mental/life experience difference was icky and not fully thought out.
I could see how this could be a comforting read for young people/ people experiencing loss but too many things were not thought through for me.

This started too slow for me, but the premise is a great one: when we die, we go to a land called Elsewhere and there age backwards until it is time for us to return to earth as a new baby. The book follows the (after)life of a girl who died at 15 and allows for some beautiful explorations on the nature of love and happiness as she interacts with the other inhabitants of Elsewhere. I spent the last 30 or 40 pages in tears.
Considering this being a YA, a genre I don’t usually go for anymore, it didn’t feel like a YA and it was just so beautiful to read. It was funny, sensitive, heartbreaking, happy,… and I honestly believe that elsewhere is a place - or at least I pray that it is!!
3 things that I love about this story… 1) you have the ability to converse with pets, like you can speak canine here? A dream come true!! 2) the idea of having a life after death is the most magical thing ever. You have a second chance of living, doing something different, and living your years the way you want! 3) watching Liz’s growth was a beautiful reminder that love, kindness and friendship is the most valuable thing that life has to offer.
You may not know everything, you may not know what you want to be in life, but having people that are there for you and you being there for them, makes life worth living ♥️ it was a gorgeous read, and it will be on my mind for a while.

An absolutely beautiful book. I will definitely be recommending this to my grade seven students.
Can't wait to study this book with my new 7th graders. What a neat story!!
