I'm definitely gonna need to physically read this rather than just listen to it so I can really appreciate it. There's lots of stuff I feel like I missed out on when my mind would drift so I'll need to sit down and read it one day.

i really enjoyed this, and kind of read it insanely fast because it encapsulates so many points of interest for me such as greek mythology, art, religion, feminism, thank u maliaaa!!
so good and fun to read, taught me a lot about pieces of art that i already loved in a way that was refreshingly informative and well researched. mccormack deconstructs female archetypes in art, whether she be monstrous, muse-like, or a damsel. it was fascinating to feel so seen and not seen in art through her nuanced dissection. she is a great writer and this book fills me with rage but also with the power of self recognition. i feel i gained so much religious and mythological context for the ways in which culture has abstracted the body. this book makes me want to exist unflinchingly in my body. girls that love art and women will eat this tf up.

جميع المطلعين على الثقافة و الأدب لابد أن تمر عليهم لوحة او ثلاث لوحات من الحضارة الغربية ، ولسبب لا أدري ما هو نجد في لوحاتهم خصال متكررة منها العري ، لماذا خصصت العري بالذكر؟ لأنه ومنذ الطفولة كنت أتساءل ليش مفصخين؟
كنت أعتقد أن هذه الدراسة - التي لا يصح تسميتها كذلك لأسباب سأذكرها - ستجاوب على هذا السؤال مع الاسئلة الأخرى، لكن الواقع هو أن الكتاب يتناول موضوع النساء في اللوحات مقسماً لأربع محاور تقريباً ( فينس - الأمهات - الجاريات و الآنسات الميتات - المتوحشات ) ويمكن للمهتم في شؤون المرأة من خلال النظر إلى التقسيم أن يدرك القضايا التي ستتناولها المؤلفة.

أعتقد أن المؤلفة استطاعت أن تقدم ربط جيد للوحات و تاريخها وواقعنا اليوم ، وقد تلفت انتباه القراء إلى جوانب غفلوا عنها ، فقد جعلتني اتنبه إلى غياب مشاعر الأمومة في لوحات مريم وعيسى عليهما السلام وهذا يعزز الفكرة الأم وهي أن تلك اللوحات رسمها رجال بتصوراتهم وعرفهم لرجال يماثلونهم في التصور و العرف ، لهذا لا تبدو النساء في اللوحات بصورة واقعية بل بصورة متخيلة حلوة كانت أم قبيحة ، كما انه يتعمد تغييب المرأة خلال تصويرها فلا ينظر إليها كإنسان بل كرمز و تجسيد .

مشكلة الكتاب الكبرى في كونه ليس دراسة ولا بحث حتى ، فالمؤلفة لا تتمتع بالموضوعية ولم تتقيد بمجال البحث - اقحمت الشواذ و المتحولين في موضوع البحث المرأة!- ولم تدون مراجعها ، لهذا لا يمكن أخذ الكتاب على محمل الجد واعتباره بحثاً في النقد الفني و تاريخ الفن فهي لم تلتزم بالادوات البحثية وكم كنت اتمنى لو سمعنا صوت الخصوم فقد ينتج عنه نقاش ثري خاصة في موضوع تقييد الجمال الانثوي و اختصار كيانها برغبات الرجل .
لا أحب الكتب أحادية التفكير لكنه كان كتاب ممتع في النهاية .
