One of Us is Lying follows four high school students, Bronwyn, Addy, Nate, and Cooper on their quest to prove themselves innocent after being the only witnesses to another classmate, Simon's accident, which leads to his death. It starts off with almost a Breakfast Club type feel, as each of the kids is in detention after school and each one is mostly in their own section of the high school social order. Bronwyn is the "nerd" of the group, Nate is the misfit, Addy is the pretty popular one and Cooper is the superstar athlete. Simon runs the school gossip social media outlet and is mostly regarded as a type of social pariah, not really trusted but nobody really wants to be on his bad side either. While in detention Simon somehow has a massive allergic reaction to peanuts and circumstances align so that he cannot be saved. The book is a major who-dun-it with lots of twists and opportunities for each of the main characters to be guilty, as each one is hiding something. In the end, the group bonds together and are able to reveal who the true murderer was and exonerate each of themselves.

★x4 | (B+) 88% | AGES 15+ | There was honestly a lot of hype in this that made me scared to read this, but I was pleasantly surprised. I’m not saying it lives up to that hype, but it definitely deserves a lot of hype. This was just a wild ride I really enjoyed.
| Characters - ★x4 | *chefs kiss* really well developed for the little time we were given with them. Or at least, it felt like very little time as everything was pretty fast paced.
| Storyline - ★x4 | Entertaining, fast-paced. Didn’t have a dull moment. It unraveled the story well with so many layers like an onion.
| Writing - ★x4 | It handled like a six POV story really well. I could tell the author really thought about their voices and who they were.
Should you read this? Yes! It has murder, gray morals, and accurate teenage angst. It’s perfect for a summer read or a cup of cocoa by the fire.

I’d be lying (ha ha) if I said I didn’t absolutely love this. I loved the way McManus wrote the book from the perspective of each of the characters, it allowed me to get a different point of view each time which was fascinating. It was an easy read and I could easily pick it up and be able to keep reading along without confusion.
The storyline had me hooked, anything that keeps me guessing is a huge winner in my eyes! A murder mystery, high school drama and secrets, the perfect mix! I couldn’t put it down until I knew who had done it.
I cannot wait to get my hands on the rest of the series and see what happens. I adored the characters and can’t wait to see what awaits them all.

I loved this book. I was a little hesitant at the beginning with the typical teenage stereotypes but as the book progressed certain characters developed in a way that made them my all time favorite book characters. I’ve also watched and read enough crime and thriller books/movies/tv shows that I’m good at solving it but I didn’t expect this twist. I can definitely say I’m looking forward to reading the sequel!
Review for teaching purposes: Somewhat predictable ending, but a fun read with plenty of teen drama. Good YA choice for high school classroom. References to sex but nothing in detail; strongest language is some f-words.
