This is an okay but not amazing collection of short stories by Irish historian Peter Berresford Ellis, writing under the pen name Peter Tremayne. Since the blurb on the cover claimed Tremayne to be a "master of the genre", I assumed that I was in for some bone-chilling stories; I suspect now that the genre referred to was actually the historical genre, because the strength of these stories lies in the way that Tremayne inserts Irish history and folk tales into the stories. Apart from that, the writing is not great and the twist endings are all predictable (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long as the writer is skilled enough to still make them terrifying. Tremayne is not that skilled). Giving this three stars because I appreciated the historical aspects of these tales, but otherwise this is not a collection I can see myself returning to to re-read.
