Rosalind Lang seeks redemption from her past and she believes using her abilities as an assassin for her country can help her obtain it. Rosalind’s latest mission is to infiltrate foreign society and uncover their latest plot before more are killed. Her mission, however, isn’t a solo one. She must pose as a wife to Orion Han and the two soon find there are deeper and more horrifying layers to this mission that they ever imagined.

This book was a solid read. I had difficulty getting into it Gong’s first duology but this pulled me in straight away. I unfortunately read it as an audiobook (which I hate doing) so it ended up souring the whole experience for me. In terms of plot, I enjoyed it but I wish there was more of it. I usually never have trouble conjuring up visuals but the book felt a bit fragmented in my mind (might’ve been the audiobook).

The characters were great and there were these amazing moments that had me kicking my feet but, I wish there was more vulnerability and “slice of life” moments. The book was not predominately romance, but it gave enough that I was blushing and giggling whenever Rosalind and Orion interacted. It had THE tropes: forced proximity, “who did this to you?” “That’s my wife.”, jealousy, jealousyyyy. I LOVED IT.

For a mission that was supposed to be low reconnaissance and long term, it felt oddly short. The plot twists were very well done and the foreshadowing was as well, although, the motives could have used a little more explanation and development. It felt kind of like being whacked in the side of the head. I’ll definitely be looking forward to the upcoming sequel.

This book had my jaw on the floor the entire time. Chloe Gong has such an incredible writing style and writes in a way that has you fully immersed in the story. I will never stop recommending these books to my fellow readers. Truly one of the best authors out there!

Got too convoluted for me at some point, so I looked up the plot to figure out what was going on (I tend to have a better time reading mystery/thriller books that start bothering me halfway through once I know about the mystery) - well, turns out it was a good thing to spoil myself - I would have absolutely hated the reveal at the end, so I'm going to jump ship now.
A pity, for the premise was interesting, if confusing, and I liked the Rosalind/Orion chemistry and how things developed, but... yeah. No, thank you.
