Reminiscent of authors like Blake Butler and Jesse Ball, Eugene Lim’s newest novel ‘Search History’ is a playful, convoluted, journey through grief. If you are the type of person who tends to laugh at a funeral because you have a hard time coping with grief, this is the novel for you. Most of the subject matter was interesting, and while I am usually a huge fan of experimental novels, there were times when this one was a just a tad too fragmented that I lost interest. I found, given which section I was in, either being highly engrossed or losing attention, which hurt the overall tone of the novel. I left the book feeling very indifferent, as I was ready for it to end despite there being some truly beautiful passages found within. If you are looking for something enigmatic, pick it up.

A challenging, enjoyable roller-coaster of a ride. There is a story line in here, of sorts, but my primary enjoyment of this novel is Lim's digressions around our current state of affairs, Asian-American identity, the progression -- or evolution -- of artificial intelligence, the act of grieving, and the definition of art in 21st century America. A reader may be challenged by the story-telling technique, but equally stimulated by Lim's observations. Highly recommended.
