a journey that you already knew probably didn't have an ending, just shaggy dogs all over the place

Reminiscent of authors like Blake Butler and Jesse Ball, Eugene Lim’s newest novel ‘Search History’ is a playful, convoluted, journey through grief. If you are the type of person who tends to laugh at a funeral because you have a hard time coping with grief, this is the novel for you. Most of the subject matter was interesting, and while I am usually a huge fan of experimental novels, there were times when this one was a just a tad too fragmented that I lost interest. I found, given which section I was in, either being highly engrossed or losing attention, which hurt the overall tone of the novel. I left the book feeling very indifferent, as I was ready for it to end despite there being some truly beautiful passages found within. If you are looking for something enigmatic, pick it up.

A challenging, enjoyable roller-coaster of a ride. There is a story line in here, of sorts, but my primary enjoyment of this novel is Lim's digressions around our current state of affairs, Asian-American identity, the progression -- or evolution -- of artificial intelligence, the act of grieving, and the definition of art in 21st century America. A reader may be challenged by the story-telling technique, but equally stimulated by Lim's observations. Highly recommended.

Great, albeit chaotic. Some moments of prose that renders the muddled experience of modern grief perfectly.

This was maybe a little too experimental for me. I feel stupid. I didn’t really get it. I didn’t hate it, but if it were longer, I would’ve DNF’d it.
