okay, so this book really brought out my inner feminist. I have so many mixed thoughts about it.
(granted I didn't read it cover to cover; I did scheming and looking at online refs.) as talked about in my class, I can't hate Pamela, only due to her background and her loyalty to mr.B's mother. however, I can not believe or trust her as a narrator, as a reader. as a journal keeper and a writer myself, I know how much can be exaggerated. my least favorite is Mr.B. I didn't like him from the start and I was just so done with him at the end. (i will put or say and spoilers.)

‘Pamela’ is an odd book.

On one hand, it’s absolutely brilliant for social history and studies on the formation of the popular novel. On the other hand, modern readers often find it tedious and disturbing.

What you think of this novel will depend entirely on your approach to it.

Personally, this is not a book I can read for fun, or at all. I hated it. My sympathy for Pamela herself was at war with my hatred for the book. Yet I can see the incredible value in Richardson’s work, and from a scholarship standpoint, I do have an appreciation for the work, and its meaning to the women who saw their situations on paper for the first time.

We must never forget that ‘Pamela’ was a wild success with its contemporary readers.

I am honestly glad to have read this novel, because it was very important for english litersture, if not literature in general. I also understand that these were different times, with different morals and different social behaviours. That I can overlook, because I don‘t think it is fair to judge a book written in a completely different social setting and context based on modern views. Though I would like to state that there is almost no message that this book conveys that I can get behind. Just because this book is very old and has pushed literature history forward does not mean that it is a good book. Just because something is influential does not mean that the thing is good! Richardson just cannot get to the point. The novel is way longer than it has to be as there is just not enough plot to really carry it through. It could have done with some serious editing.

Wild ride. It was pretty bad but I still really enjoyed reading honestly (Part 1, at least). Pamela is just SUCH a drama queen, it was hilarious and I sent some passages to my friend with #relatable. And it was pretty action packed from the beginning, with an array of wacky characters. Even though it was so ridiculous and sexist I was entertained taking it all with a grain of salt. But then Part 2 was so dry and took forever for basically nothing to happen; all the fire of Pamela in Part 1 was just extinguished and it just lost its lustre.

The most horrible, awful, terrible book I’ve ever read. Absolutely nothing happens. Pamela talks about her virtue and Mr. B assaults her then Pamela falls in love with him for no reason the end. I cannot believe I lost time to this book. It might’ve been fine if it were satire. But it’s not. It’s so bad, please stay away from this book.
