This book is simultaneously very much written as middle grade and also absolutely horrifying???

Honestly I probably would have finished this book but I needed to return it. I didn’t get far in but it had a promising start.

What a thrilling read! I devoured this in a day. Such a great jumping point for younger readers who would like to try out horror/science-fiction! Without the trends of Goosebumps & RL Stine in today’s reading world, youth need more access to books like Bloom! Can’t wait for the next installment!

For the first 1/4 or so of the book, I was HERE FOR IT. Sci-fi/horror featuring invasive plants? Yes! As more and more elements started coming in, though, I got less and less excited. Once the whole OMG IT'S ALIENS twist came up, I started rolling my eyes. When we learned OMG THE PROTAGONISTS ARE HALF ALIEN my eye roll all the way to the back of my head. The pace also started to drag in the second half or so, to the point that I was bored during the Intense Climactic Rescue Scene and just wanted it to be over. 5 stars for initial concept, 2 stars for final execution.

3.5 I picked it up because of the cover and got halfway through before I happened to look at the spine and realized it was shelved under Junior Fiction instead of YA. Suspenseful, a little gory, a very delicate dancing around a potentially touchy subject, very definitely SF horror-ish -- I think it'd be good for kids in maybe grades 5+ who are looking for that kind of thing. Books in this line are a little hard to come by. I'll read the next one too.
