For the last forty days my boys and I sat on the sofa each night and read from Welcoming the Christ Child by @elissabjeletichdavis. It was perfect for our little time together preparing for the celebration of Christ’s Incarnation.

My boys are young, and each narrative of Scripture in this book was spoken perfectly for their understanding. They made note of stories they recognized, they asked questions, and they mentioned our readings in applicable ways throughout the days that followed.

Each of the forty readings are summarized narratives on Scripture that take up no more than one front-to-back page. Each reading ends with three comprehension questions - I love this about the book most. This encourages the boys to listen closely and to make connections with each person in the lineage of Christ from Adam all the way to Joseph. We pointed out ways we see the pre-Incarnate Christ in the Old Testament, such as Jonah and the prophecies of Daniel; and the life of the Theotokos.

There are more contemplations beyond these questions, but I think we will save those for the coming years as they get older and can discuss with greater depth.

I am definitely grateful to now have this book for years to come to help us prepare during each Nativity Lent for the celebration of God becoming man. It’s a great resource, most especially for families with small children, and it’s a great way to begin laying a solid foundation and understanding of our Faith.
