Happy Halloween! I’ve decided that going forward on this book journey I’m also gonna use these reviews as a kind of book review journal that also records how I’m doing and what was happening when I finished each book, now into the review.

As many do I finally got around to reading “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow” I was surprised at how short the story was. The copy I got was a condensed version. So I opted to listening to the audiobook version.

And I really was surprised. I’ve always though this was just about the headless horseman, but I was really really wrong. This is a tale more funny and crude than spooky. And I was going to keep this spoiler free but I really wanna talk about the main character, more specifically how he acted and the fate he fell upon.

I couldn’t spell his name correctly even if I tried, so for the review I’ll call itchyboat. Itchyboat was a bastard straight up, a good snake who had a thing for screwing around with married women and their daughters. And he was a prick until the bitter end. Even when he was challenged to fight with the strong guy he tried to play it cool. But when faced the the headless horseman of sleepy hollow, his sharp tounge was no match. And I’d like to think he got sent to some sort of hellish limbo.

Overall a decent read for Halloween. Can’t wait to finish “Last Days” and start on something a bit shorter. Because my big book for November will be “11/22/63”.

How did this inspire so many adaptions???? Good story but way too descriptive for me :( found it hard to follow

read for class—

as sleepy hollow (1999) directed by tim burton is one of my favorite movies, i was very excited to see the source material on one of my syllabi for the semester.

and while it was fun it wasn’t quite what i was expecting. the class i read it for is a gothic horror short story class and this one felt more sleepy (haha get it?) than actual horror. i understand that you have to look at the time it was written and think about what was viewed as scary, but even then…

it felt overly descriptive for no reason and didn’t really get to the meet of the story until 5 pages before the end.

i did still enjoy it and had some fun reading, just not what i was expecting i guess

Despite its reputation as a gothic/horror story, I didn't find it to be anything close to either of those genres. Not that I'm trying to challenge the fact that it's a classic—in fact, it's very deserving of that title considering its wonderful descriptive imagery. What I did not expect was how incredibly entertaining and down-right hilarious ! it would be. If anything, this amazing short story was peak comedy, and Ichabod—what a hateable douche—totally deserved what was coming to him.

I've read this before, but first time listening to the audiobook. The language is cumbersome enough that it trips up the narrative. I would recommend reading it instead.
