Aspiring actress/comedian Jess heads home early from a shift at the diner that ended particularly badly. She discovers a terrified five year old boy hiding by her apartment, who is being followed by an angry, naked man claiming to be his father. When neighbors approach the man, he gets epically violent, and all hell breaks loose. Jess, for reasons she doesn't understand right away, ends up on the run with the boy in an effort to keep him safe. But not everything is as it first seems.

That's the best summary I can provide without spoilers, and it is definitely best to go into this one blind. The story twists further and goes deeper than I initially expected. I loved the dynamic between Jess and her mother, Cookie, and the fragile relationship that develops between Jess and the boy is both sweet and gut-wrenching. The story wears its many influences on its sleeve but uses them for a brilliant alchemy that creates something entirely original and special. Another excellent Cassidy novel and one of my top reads of the year for sure. Highly recommended.
