I originally wrote this book off for the writing style - it was a little more quirky than I was used to, and I’ve never been a huge fan of swearing outside of dialogue. Just takes me out of it. But I stuck through the first third of the book, and I knew it would be a book I stayed up until 2am finishing (spoiler alert: I did). It was not a perfect book - there were some messages and passages I found clunky (Jess’s inner monologues were a little much sometimes, but maybe I’m just a bit pretentious) , but in general I felt the heartwarming moments with the kid taking me by surprise, the existential dread really setting in, the desire, the need to know more, more, more… it was an addicting read and has reignited a real passion for stories again. THAT is a powerful book.

Nat Cassidy is just cementing himself as one of my top favorite authors. Such a nearly seamless story. Absolutely packed to bursting with events without convenient, that’s-too-easy writing. Idk that I liked it as much as I liked Mary but heck. Hats off.

After Nat Cassidy's Mary was my top read from 2024, I could not wait to get my hands on his newest book When the Wolf Comes Home. And, fucking heck, he's done it again! I don't know how any book after this one will be able to top it. Definitely my favourite read of 2025 so far!
If I weren't buddy reading this book, I think I would have finished it in a day. This is possibly the most well paced and most thrilling book I have ever read. Nat Cassidy spares no detail yet every word on the page - every line, every plot piece - is carefully crafted and leads to one of the most satisfying climaxes in fiction I've read. My jaw was on the floor after nearly every chapter! So TENSE and STRESSFUL in all the right ways!
Bravo Nat Cassidy
