Mixed feelings on this one.
I appreciate the thoughtful effort the author put into the book’s themes— e.g. managing fear/anxiety, generational trauma cycles, the challenges of both being a parent and a child.
However, on a sentence-by-sentence basis, I felt pretty “meh” about this book and its plot lines. The book’s themes ran deep, but the action of the book was grounded in goofy gore, and the balance just didn’t quite hold together for me. Mixed feelings on the ending as well.
Added 0.25 star for the author’s beautiful afterword. It makes me hope he leans in to that writing style for future work.

The book was good but not at all what I was expecting. I don’t like thrillers, and I don’t like sci-fi, and this is a sci-fi thriller posing as a horror novel.

yet another "america is the centre of the universe book". fuck, i hate getting hyped up about great horror and the horror being... connected to war in afghanistan . but actually, america is the one true horror so maybe that checks out.
main character is horribly written, but what to expect from a male author to write female characters. daddy issues and inconsistent personality wrapped together. (im not sure if author knows that women dont deal with daddy issues like this)
i wasnt introduced to her enough to really care. also, the writing seems kinda misogynistic??
not enough tension built throughout the book, the author basically tells you the reason for all this on page 120. if i know everything on page 120 of 320, what motivation do i have to continue reading? sure, to find out how it ends but it can only end in everyone dead or just some people dead, so like.
nothing new and profound as people hooked me on. in my opnion, author took too complicated a story and couldnt deliver.
