Part travelogue, part portrait of France and Spain in the 1920s, "The Sun Also Rises" accurately and realistically simulates what it's like to spend a lot of time with drunk assholes.
I’m giving this no stars during this reread because of the violent amounts of racism, anti-semitism, homophobia, and sexism. This was a five star book for me as a teen somehow? Was I insane? I remember it as truly beloved and it is truly some of the most beautiful longing dialogue in the world to me absolutely ruined by hateful ideology. No thank you.
It's not all bad. The fishing episode and the final section were certainly very good. He packed far more substance into less space in his short stories though. The characters were largely unlikeable, and worse, uninteresting. He was a great writer, this wasn't his greatest read.

it's always interesting to see how life was in the past and there's some really wonderful parts of this but there's some really awful antisemitism and general racism that is ugly to read today. everyone is drunk all the time and so mean to each other all the fucking time. life in this time also stresses me out but that's just because i can't imagine a world where i just go places without double checking that all the plans and people involved are solidified
