Written in a cool way - fast paced, colloquial, the minds of the characters wander or repeat thoughts and phrases, as we do naturally.

Who needs a love triangle when you can have a love star (one character who is loved by all of the other characters).

It's a symptom of the time the book was written in, but it was still surprising to read the racist and anti-Semitic language within the book.

In my humble opinion… easily Hemingway’s best (so far). Such a vivid, rapid book that almost reads more like a play. I can see how this garnered such a cult like following. Not necessarily life changing for me, so that’s why it doesn’t get the full 5 - but a perfect book every other way.

Initial rating 2/5 pending further research because I don’t think I really understood it.

Update - after some additional cultural context, 3/5. I just don’t really enjoy Hemingway’s prose.

The word that comes to my mind when thinking about this book is "boring". I hated it until about half way through, where it finally got a little interesting. Other books make me never want to put them down but this book made it hard to keep reading.

rich doomers trip with centaury appropriate takes and suprisingly well written confrontations between characters
