Holy Hex! I needed a paranormal rom-com fix and this one provided that and more. The grumpy/sunshine vibe is sexy and strong and I was laughing throughout the whole book at the hilarious antics. Yet another new favorite author to add to my list.
Rose Maxwell has handed over the reins of Prima Apparent to her triplet sister, Violet who came into her magic late in the game at the ripe old age of thirty-two. This leaves Rose feeling lost and unsure of where her future leads. So with time on her hands, she goes on a horse-saving mission that lands her in jail and community service, she participates in a no-pants subway event and tries her hand at bounty-hunting nasty supernaturals. What do all these have in common? They involve the hot sexy half-demon veterinarian Damian Adams, aka Dr. McGrumpy Pants. The man was an unforgettable one-night stand who happens to be Rose's appointed boss at his animal sanctuary and her self-proclaimed protector from nefarious supernaturals and Rose's own bad choices.
There's nothing more satisfying than watching the sexy grumpilicious demon doctor fall for a fearless and confident witch who is looking for her thing in life. However, teenager Damian had a witch hex placed on him by his angry witch girlfriend which means he cannot fall in love with anyone or he will lose his soul. Avoiding relationships most of his life with no repeats, he cannot risk his soul. Damian's broodiness is warranted due to the only time he got his father's approval was when Damian embraced his dark side becoming a bounty hunter known throughout the supernatural realm as The Hunter. But he's put those days behind him after his friend Miguel saved him from giving in to his demon side completely. Rose is staying single until she can change her "sucktastic luck", including a narcissistic ex-fiance tiger shifter, and figure out her life. All her life she's been trained to be the Prima Apparent and when that was passed along to her sister and rightful holder, she felt relief as well as regret at missing out on a normal life. So out with the old predictable and boring Rose, and in with the sexy and free Rose. Neither Damian nor Rose want a long-term relationship, therefore they settle for FB status (that's fuck buddy for those not in the know). Yeah, we all know how that's gonna turn out. Relationships with no strings attached are even better when they fall head over heels in love.
Let's not forget the fantastic group of supporting characters including Rose's ride-or-die sisters, Violet and Olive, her strong and feisty Granny Edie, and her mouthy demon succubus friend Harper. Damian's support team includes his friend and mentor Miguel and his friends Lincoln (Violet's fiance and North American Pack Alpha), Adrian the lion shifter, and "Guardian Angel extraordinaire" Bax. And though his sophisticated and self-serving demon brother Julius doesn't seem supportive at first, he does come around. I can't wait to read their stories.
From their first meet sex to the memorable Cusack grand gesture, I devoured this delightful story about starting over and finding your niche in life all on your own. I started with book 2 of the Supernatural Singles series which is fine as a standalone, but I'm definitely going back to read Vi's and Linc's story and I plan to keep tabs for stories to come.

I needed a palette cleanser so badly, so I’m back to the campy and fated mate obsessed world of Not the Witch You Wed-- Where the supernatural community is both a secret and not a secret from “those norms” and “do sex demons and vampires feed on their victims or kill them? that question is never answered! just have fun!” And I am having fun reading it.
This one is about the second eldest, former Prima in training, sunshine witch Rose Maxwell-- and love interest Damien the grumpy demonic “I love animals, I hate people, and I will say so 12 times a chapter” veterinarian. It’s a match made in heaven, or it would be if Damien’s hellish self-doubt and Rose’s jekyll and hyde routine (except she oscillates between shy and badass instead of manic and innocent) weren’t keeping them both apart. They had a one-night stand before the events of the book that neither of them can stop introspecting about, but they’re determined to fight their chemistry nevertheless. Rose (along with her sisters and Harper the succubus), attempt to steal a malnourished horse when the police show up to detain them. Later, the charges are dropped, but the plot of the book needs to happen, so Rose is sentenced to community service in what turns out to be an Animal Sanctuary (who had rescued the emaciated horse, duh), with that guy she had a one night stand with. Hijinks ensue.
The ensemble is fun, the plot is predictable, and the hex on Damien’s soul is totally justified/ part of a prophecy/broken with the power of true love. Damien himself, Damien’s bisexual ex, Damien’s demon half-brother Julius, as well as the ordinarily icy Christine Maxwell all get their respective redemptive moments. Then, everyone lives happily ever after. Rose Maxwell is a hunter-in-training under the tutelage of Char (Demon/bartender/bounty hunter) instead of the emotionally overinvested Damien who breaks his soulhex and becomes Rose’s lover. The epilogue t’s up Olive, the introverted bookworm witch’s book to come and Baxter the guardian angel who will be her love interest. In the first book, Bax was mentioned repeatedly and I thought he was gay-- I thought the alliteration of an asexual succubus, a magicless witch, and a gay angel being best friends was cool-- but it turns out he’s carried a torch for Olive for a long time. We see flickers of it in this book whenever the entire cast of characters are together. I’ll pick up the next book at my library when it comes out February 2024.
I love this series but a huge part of me is like... if you want to write a story about a grumpy vet boy and a girl training to be a cop then just write that story without the magic? I dislike the term “mate” and it seemed the magical elements were there but raised a lot more questions than they answered. Rose was about to be the next Prima, and we keep hearing about how the Maxwell bloodline is extremely powerful but to what end?; Damien and Julius fought and drew blood when their demon father gave them toys to play with. Damien was a bounty hunter when he was a teenager, which means he detains people from the magical council on behalf of his father, Prince of Hell. We’re told about his cruelty, and I think we see him once in a flashback, and he disowns his sons for... being too nice? One quits fearing the monster he was becoming so he fires and disowns them both? I’m still left wondering about the logistics of demons and vampires in a world with angels, shifters, succubi, and everything in between. Like what's the Prince of Hell doing down there? But you know what, I’m thinking about it too hard again: this is Halloween Town, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, Charmed, Sabrina the Teenage Witch vibes. I like how the Maxwell triplets are portrayed and described as curvacious, that’s pretty cool. I want to draw them; I picture them in my head as three curvy brunettes but with color in their hair that corresponds with their name, and Olive has bangs in my head for some reason. I think it’s cute that Violet has purple magic and Rose has pick magic; I can only imagine Olive has green magic. I wonder if the supernatural singles will continue after Olive, like with Harper. I know she’s ace (I think?! I could be wrong, I was wrong about Baxter and in this book she’s more “I smell the horniness on you” and “stick me with a dildo & set it on high, what did you just say?!” in this book) but she could be demi and we could finally get an explanation for how supernatural stereotypical “baddies” feed on their victims, only like... sexily and with consent, I’d read that lmao. I think I’ve been too harsh on the romance genre. I just have to.... Read them when I’m of a mind to appreciate it. Recently my reads have been dense and difficult to digest-- a sweet fantasy romance was just what I needed to break that up.
