I saw this book recommended a few places and I finally got around to reading it. I had a bit of trouble getting into it at first, but once I finally did, I sped through it. The twists and reveals are super interesting and incredible. I can’t wait to read the next one.

I honestly don’t know how to review this because it was an emotional roller coaster. I was mad, anxious, and sad throughout the whole book. One of the best writing of female characters! I loved that the book cover a wide multiple genres. This book was painfully real & very heavy about a very broken system. It was a very important and compelling read. Highly recommend it!

There are some very heavy parts to this book, but they add to the story in such a way I don't think it would be possible to omit them in any way. There is a transperson in the book, but they do not experience, at least not that is mentioned in major detail, dysmorphia. There is a brief mention of transphobia when
their parents quietly disown them, only in part because they are transgender, not the primary reason.

This is an amazing and unique book unlike any I have read before.
The book is split up into different povs, two of which are told through third person narrative and one which is told through second person narrative. I'd never read a book before that used second person and it was really cool. At first it felt strange, but it didn't take long for the second person chapters to feel very natural and for me to stop noticing that it even was. NK Jemisin is an amazing and talented writer and in this book weaves an interesting, complex, and captivating world together with rich characters.

One thing I will mention is that I felt that this book was rather heavy. Throughout reading and after I finished I felt very contemplative and at times sad or disturbed by events which occurred and ways in which the society functioned. This was intentional as the book it set in an apocalyptic world.
